Garage door adjustment 101 

The first thing you should do is test your garage door. You need to move the garage door up and down until you find a spot where the garage door stays without moving. If that place is less than 36 inches or more than 48 inches from the ground, you will have to have the garage door balanced and adjusted.  As a professional garage door repair company we would keep the garage door open, a few feet off the ground, as this helps keep the pressure off the door springs. As a rule we use a ladder under the door to make sure it won’t close unintentionally while working on it. 

As a pro our next step would be to move the garage door springs within the track hanger. And once the spring is free of tension we would remove from its track hanger. At this point determining where to adust the garage door spring would depend on how the garage door closing. (if it was to fast we would move the spring to the next higher hole on the bracket. But if it was opening to fast we would move it to the next lower hole) 

Our next step in doing a garage door adjustment would be to see that the garage door is closing evenly. All garage door repair-man should use a level to determine that it’s hitting the ground perfectly on both sides. In the event that it doesn't we would adjust the spring tension on both sides of the garage door till it does. 

The final step to a garage door adjustment is to adjust the lift cables. We always try to adjust the lifting cable instead of the spring. 
The cable is attached to the garage door and goes to the S-hook that attaches to the track support. Keeping the garage door propped open we take the S-hook out of the support, and loosen or tighten the cable as required.
